Monster Phonics

Foundations Programme

Our Monster Phonics Foundations Programme develops speaking and listening skills. Children learn to become attuned to the sounds and begin to develop oral blending and segmenting skills. This teaching lays the foundations for teaching of systematic synthetic phonics.

The Phase 1 curriculum consists of 7 aspects.

Each aspect contains 3 strands:

  • Tuning into sounds (auditory discrimination)
  • Listening and remembering sounds (auditory memory and sequencing)
  • Talking about sounds (developing vocabulary and language comprehension

Pre-Phase 2

This Pre-Phase 2 Section can be used with children  who have completed Phase 1 and are ready to recognise and say letter sounds.

Pre-Phase 2 in our Foundations Programme has a slower pace than Phase 2 teaching in Reception. Pre-Phase 2 covers only one letter each week.  Lessons and resources are provided to teach the first 8 letters taught in Phase 2: s, a , t, p, i, n , m and d.
